If you have an idea for a screenplay and want to preserve your copyright, it's a good idea to register it with the Screenwriters Guild West (USA).

For books, contracts with agents and publishers, the East Coast Writers Guild is ideal as they have an in-house legal help that can give you feedback on contracts before you sign.
